Fetească Albă
An ancient grape variety, Fetească Albă has been cultivated for centuries in the region and remains Moldova’s most widely planted native white grape. Renowned for its adaptability to different climates and soils, it can produce an exceptionally broad range of styles, from dry to medium-sweet and sparkling wines.
The delicately aromatic Fetească Albă creates elegant wines with finesse, balanced texture, and lively acidity. The floral notes of vine blossom, acacia, and wildflowers are beautifully balanced by refreshing notes of citrus and green apple.
Fetească Regală
A semi-aromatic white grape variety, Fetească Regală is a natural crossing of Grasă and Fetească Albă . It typically shows richer texture and structure than Fetească Albă. Its ability to adapt to both cool and warm sites makes it highly versatile, allowing winemakers to craft light, crisp, refreshing white wines, sparkling wines or complex oaked wines with excellent ageing potential.
The best wines from Fetească Regală are celebrated for their finesse and delicate aromas of field flowers, complemented by notes of pear and citrus
Viorica
Unique to Moldova, Viorica was developed at the Chișinău Research Institute in 1969 as part of a research programme to breed varieties that make quality wines while resisting local cold continental winters.
Viorica is an aromatic white grape that produces intensely scented wines with floral and fruity aromas and refreshing acidity, ranging from dry to sweet styles as well as sparkling wines. It offers a deliciously fragrant profile of acacia, jasmine, and linden blossom, layered with citrus, lychee, yellow apple, and candied apricot.
Rară Neagră
Rară Neagră, also known as Băbească Neagră in Romania, is one of Eastern Europe’s most ancient red grape varieties. Celebrated for producing light, graceful wines, it offers fine, velvety tannins and vibrant aromas of rose petals, red currant, and wild strawberry.
A typical Rară Neagră is fruity, refreshing, and best enjoyed young, though more refined expressions can be crafted for bottle ageing. Its naturally bright acidity makes it especially well-suited for rosés and even sparkling wines. Rară Neagră is also an important ingredient in blends, contributing freshness and elegant aromatics.
Fetească Neagră
An ancient black grape variety, Fetească Neagră has become a true regional flagship. It is highly regarded for its ability to express the unique attributes of a particular climate or vineyard, as well as the skill of the winemaker.
Wonderfully versatile, Fetească Neagră can produce a wide range of styles—from light, fruity wines intended for immediate enjoyment to complex, concentrated reds with excellent ageing potential. Notable for its firm tannins and high acidity, Fetească Neagră tends to be powerfully flavoured, reflecting notes of blackberry, sour cherry, dried plum, black tea, and subtle spice.
Wineries
On the wine scene since 2020, Crama Mircești was founded by the long-standing winemaker Arcadie Foșnea, whose training in Germany is reflected in the refreshing crispness of his white wines. After nearly two decades of experience, Arcadie returned to his home village Mircești to establish a small winery that combines tradition with modern craftsmanship.
The 17-hectare vineyard lies in a natural amphitheatre at 270–340 metres above sea level, making it the highest vineyard in Moldova. These elevated slopes, with loam-clay soils, enjoy generous sunshine and cool nights — ideal conditions for crafting elegant, high-quality wines.
Established in 2011, Gogu Winery is one of Moldova’s newest organic-certified wineries. Ilie Gogu, a gifted winemaker trained in Chisinau, founded the winery after a decade of experience, fulfilling his family’s long-held dream. The small estate quickly became synonymous with high-quality, expressive wines.
The 10-hectare vineyard is located on gentle rolling hills that enjoy abundant sunshine, hot summers and dry autumns. Its predominantly clay and loam soils help create wines of remarkable fruit purity and complexity, reflecting the distinctive terroir of southeastern Moldova.
Founded in 2002 by the pioneer winemaker Constantin Stratan and his cousin, Equinox is Moldova’s first certified organic vineyard. After extensive experience, including overseeing vintages in California and New Zealand, Constantin established his own small winery with the ambition to craft Moldova’s finest wines.
The 5-hectare vineyard is planted on hillside slopes overlooking the Nistru Valley, where sand-clay soils, plenty of sunshine, and cooling breezes from the Black Sea create ideal growing conditions. The grapes are grown organically, guided by the belief that this approach best expresses the vineyard’s true terroir.
